Steamed Buns (Mantou)

Mantou or steamed buns is considered as a staple food of Chinese citizens to this day. Mantou originated in China. It is said that during the period of the Three Kingdoms, a famous army General, Zhuge Liang, led his army southwest and passed by a place called LuShui. Unfortunaely the river and the air surrounding the place was polluted and poisoned. This polluted river killed many  of Zhuge Liang soldiers when tried to cross the river. This prevented then from going any further.

Zguge Liang was very anxious but the could not do anything except to pay homage to the River God so that he and his army team could cross the river safely. He ordered his soldires to slaughter animals, and wrap their meat in dough as an expression of worship to the River God. Dough-making was then adopted by the local siciety and slowly evolved intoo the Mantou that we eat today. This is the origin of Montau.

Today, steamed buns come in many flavours and forms.
