Chapter 9 : Can I be a good clinician ( 2 )

9.2 How do I present well in case presentation?

Most important, you have to know your subject well. You must have the substance in order to present well. Clerk your cases well and be organised in your clerking. Ensure that you do have an organized way of clerking cases.

An important point to know is the definition of diseases. It is a good way to start talking when asked by the examiner on the cases that you have presented. One man weakness of medical students is uncertainty of the definition of diseases. Knowing the definition of diseases carries a lot of advantages to medical students, as it is self-explanatory.

Another important points is knowing the natural history of diseases. It will help in the clerking and determination of prognosis and predicting the sequelae of the disease.

After knowing all that need to be presented, a good student should have the ability to speak well and express himself/herself. This can be achieved by regular practice which can be done in front of the mirror or presenting among friends. A good eye contact is crucial during case presentation. It gives an impression of high self confidence.

From my experience, better marks are given to students with better speaking ability although the things said are similar.

Sometimes, how things are said is more important than what things are said.
