Raincoat

When it rain, do you stay in school and wait until the rain stops? Or do you use an umbrella? Or would you run home in the rain? Most of us have experienced the use of a raincoat during a rain. Have you ever thought of who invented the raincoat? Why is a raincoat water-proof, but not our school uniforms?

The idea of inventing the raincoat began by chance when Charles Macintosh, a Scottish chemist who was working in a rubber actory accidentally poured latex on his clothes. He was unable to wipe off the latex. After work, he had to wear the dirty clothes and walk home. On his way home, heavy rain came pouring down. When he reached home, he was surprised to find that the part of his clothes that was covered with latex was not wet at all.

This sparked an idea for Macintosh to carefully coat a layer of latex to a robe and this became the world’s first raincoat.
