Disposable diapers can be considered as an important invention in today’s
modern life. It has had a direct effect on the quality of life for millions of
parents worldwide.
It was invented by Marion Donovan, an American inventpr and entrepreneur in
Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA), whose family members were known inventors and Marion
followed suit.
Marion was a housewife and a young mother struggling with chores that all
mothers endured; constant changes of soiled diapers, sheets and baby clothes.
Frustrated by the thankless and repetitive task, she created a diaper cover
that kept her baby and the covered area dry. Marion sat at her sewing machine
with a shower curtain and after several attempts, completed a waterproof diaper
cover.
The year 1946 marked a turning points in diaper history Marion’s invention,
called the Boater, was futher
redesigned with metal and plastic snaps to phase out the use of unsafe safety
pins on most cloth diapers.
In 1947, Marion used disposable absorbent material and combined it with her Boater design to create the first
convenient disposable diaper.
Food for Thought :
Demand is the inspiration
for invention and inovation. Constant attention to quality improvement will
lead to new inventions and innovations.
