Cyclone Technology

James Dyson was not happy with his vacuum cleaner. As he was vaccuuming his house, he noticed that the vacuum cleaner would lose power as more dirt and dust was sucked into it. This was because fine dust particles clogged the vacuum cleaner’s dust collecting bag and thus prevented airflow. He took 5 years and 6,000 different designs to perfect his bag-less vacuum cleaner. This new vacuum cleaner used cyclone technology – where centrifugal forces were used to remove dust and dirt effectively from the airflow.

The use of cyclone technology to separate dirt from the air is not new. This technology has been used in sawmills to remove sawdust from the air. It is also used in oil refineries and cement factories. Jamed Dyson managed to reduce the size of the device to generate cyclonic airflow from the size of a house to a small box!
