In the past, people put red-hot charcoal into metal iron to heat up the
bottom part of an iron for ironing purposes. There was another variation of the iron
that was made of bronze with quality detailed crafting. However, this was not
used by common people as only rich people wew able to afford it.
In the eighteenth century in Europe, cotton clothes became popolar and were
mass produced and the use of iron also became common. At the time, the most
popular irons were the solid types that came in pairs. One was used for ironing
while the other was placed on top of the fire to be heated up. Tailors in the
Netherlands used a slightly different version. They used a box shaped iron with
an empty core that was different from the traditional Chinese iron. This type
of iron was heated up using red-hot metal plates instead of charcoal.
The modern electric iron was developed by an American named Henry Seeley in
1882. During that time, electric supply was not common in households, thus
electric ironswere not widely used until 1924 when the first practical iron was
invented
